A word about ethical breeders, the Internet, Price, and Show versus Pet quality

So, you are nervous about finding a puppy online? You should be.

Puppy millers and back yard breeders do not care about breeding dogs to the standard much less the health of the puppies or their parents. This is what makes ethical breeders and show dog fanciers extremely upset. The practice of mass producing a popular breed for monetary gain is ever increasing and is ruining wonderful breeds. Cross breeding and creating “Designer Dogs” is also on the rise. It’s a way to mass produce cute little dogs for money. Help stamp out puppy mills. Do not purchase from them or from Pet Stores, they are supplied by the millers.

The Internet can be a very scary place to do any kind of business and has become a place where criminals can freely operate. But there are some extremely ethical and caring breeders there. You have to be very careful, do your homework, and ask a lot of questions. An ethical breeder would want you to ask them anything and will also always be there for you after you have your new loved one at home.

We understand peoples concern about the price. Those concerns are valid ones. There are very many pups available for very low prices either online or in your local newspapers. Why? Again, because of mass production of puppies for sale without regard to health or quality.

So why are there differences in price? What is the difference between “Pet Quality” and “Show or Breed Quality”?

We do not charge the same for a dog for breeding as one for pet.  The prices vary according to how closely we estimate the puppy will be to the written standard of the breed. Also more males are born than females, usually, so females cost more. And I don't know why, but more people want the females. (I think males who are neutered young are more loving and females are more independent.)

All our puppies are sold on a spay/neuter contract unless otherwise arranged. The AKC registration for what is considered a “Pet Quality” rather than a “Show or Breed Quality” pup is called a Limited Registration. It is AKC registered and can compete in the AKC agility and obedience events. It is just that it may have a flaw a judge can see and is not close enough to the standard to be shown in AKC conformation shows and perfect enough to breed. Yet the puppy is healthy, cute as a button and a wonderful pet and companion.

If a breeder tells you that a 6 week old puppy is definately “Show or Breed Quality” they are either inexperienced, or are not being truthful. There is no way that a breeder can tell if a very young puppy will turn out close enough to the written standard to be “Show or Breed Quality” until it is much older. We believe a pup must be kept by the breeder for a minimum of 8 months to 10 months and even then, he may have a growth spurt, ruin his top line, or his weight may jump over the limit or he stayed too small. Keeping a dog and investing so much love, energy, care, training for 8 months will certainly increase the price.  Once in a while a litter may have an ouststanding puppy that shows "potential" for show or breeding.  This means just that, the breeder sees potential by experienced evaluation and sees special qualities that give a glimpse of the puppy's qualities as an adult. Potential is there but no guarantee that this puppy will enjoy showing and become a champion.Only the finest examples of the breed should be bred.

Why buy from us?

Our Yorkie pups are AKC (American Kennel Club) registered.  Our Biewers are regestered both in the United States with the BBIR and in Germany. Our foundation dogs have pedigrees that include many of the finest Champions from Europe and the United States.

We raise all our dogs in our house close to us, so they are used to household noises, strangers, grandchildren, rides in cars, and lots of love and lap time. After being weaned, puppies learn so much more from their mother than any human can teach them. That is why our puppies stay with us until they are at least 12 to 16 weeks old, sometimes longer, giving them more time to interact with their mother, father, aunts, siblings and cousins allows them to learn "pack etiquette". It is so interesting and rewarding to watch our dogs teach the youngsters what is acceptable and what is not. This creates a pup that is well balanced and confident as an adult.

We keep puppies for a minimum of 12 weeks of age to give them plenty of time to socialize with us, their litter mates, and learn pack etiquette from their mother and our other dogs. By the time the puppies are ready for their new homes, they voluntarily sleep in their crates at night and for naps. They also have a grasp of what the piddle pads are for and use them as best they can. And they trot after the older dogs who teach them to "do their thing" and to romp and play outdoors.

We do not breed tiny t-cup type Yorkies or Biewers (there is no such thing as a t-cup, teacup etc.) Our Yorkies and Biewers are athletic, sturdy and vibrant little dogs. We estimate that most of our pups will be arouond 5 or 6 lbs. Sometimes a pup is smaller, once in a while one may be bigger. Just like kids in a family, we don't all reach the same height and weight as each other, so it is very difficult to predict.  We try to make the best guess we can.

We guarantee against life threatening genetic diseases. Our excellent health record is something we are very proud of. Our puppies have at least three Well Puppy exams with their vet. They will have had two, perhaps three, in the series of their puppy shots and deworming. Their final vet visit includes a 12 point examination after which they receive their Well Puppy health letter signed by our veterinarian.

You will receive a Puppy Packet containing a helpful informational handout, their complimentary 5 generation pedigree, their Well Puppy Health Letter, immunization records, test results and some goodies.

Prices for our dogs generally range from $1,800 to $2,500 for our Yorkies and $3,000 to $5,000 for our Biewers depending on how we evaluate them. By the time they reach 12 weeks we are able to see things such as bite, top line, ear set, coat, color, temperament, size, and many other things that breeders look for.

Prices vary according to gender as well. They are sold on a Limited Registration (no breeding rights) with a spay/neuter contract unless other arrangements are made.

You may see Yorkie pups advertised for less money. However, our outstanding pedigrees, the loving effort, time and expense we invest in raising beautiful socialized dogs with wonderful temperaments does have its price. We take great pride in our work to raise healthy puppies that are well adjusted, making them the best companions for their future families.

We screen prospective parents carefully to make sure that we can match the puppy's personality to the lifestyle of their new family and ensure our dogs get the very best. We do require that you have a fenced area for the puppy to safely run and play. If you are interested, please let us know more about yourself and your family environment by returning the adoption questionnaire found on our website.

If you live close enough, we encourage our future "parents" to visit the litter, their parents and us as often as they want as their puppy grows. It is always a pleasure to get to know our puppy families and we enjoy continued friendships with many of them. We provide support long after the pup comes home with you and happily answer questions and concerns.

Shipping?

We will not ship a Calaryn puppy alone on a plane. It is best for people to come to pick up their puppy by car, if that is possible. For those flying in from distant states to the Seattle-Tacoma (Sea-Tac) airport, we will meet you there with your new baby. Usually, if planned far enough in advance, it is possible to get a round-trip airfare price that is comparable to what it would cost to ship, anyway. This way, the puppy can ride in the cabin with you and not have its life, health or emotional well-being jeopardized by a ride in the hold of a plane.

As an alaternative, we know a wonderful woman who hand carries them on the plane in the cabin with her and personally delivers them to you at your nearest airport for the fee of $350.00 payable to her.  She has our trust and has delivered very happy dogs to us. .

Please do not hesitate to write or call with questions. You can always call to chat. We love talking “Yorkie”.

Warm Wishes,
Carolyn and Larry
